StatusGator vs IsDown: The Best IsDown Alternative

StatusGator vs IsDown

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Overview

StatusGator and IsDown are two products that provide status page aggregation and vendor status monitoring. At first glance, these two products look the same but they are quite different in reality.

StatusGator was launched in 2015 and has been aggregating status data for more than 9 years. StatusGator is a status page provider that monitors the uptime of your own website and apps. StatusGator also monitors the statuses of 4,000+ cloud service providers that its users can display on their status pages.

IsDown is a newer alternative focusing on status and uptime monitoring. It is similar but lacks many key features that StatusGator has. To make the best choice, we will closely examine the differences between the two.

Key Service Aggregation Features Overviews

IsDown appears to be a copy of StatusGator. However, they are not identical copies and have different features and services.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Component Filtering

With StatusGator you can monitor not only the overall service but multiple components from it as separate services and regions on single or different status pages. Simply add the service, filter out the necessary components, and type up the display name.
If you wish to monitor another component or the service provider overall, just add the service to the status page and leave it as is or filter as necessary. You can filter down to include components, regions, products, and features.

IsDown has a limited, more recent approach to component filtering. There is no option to add the same service multiple times to monitor components. You have to go to the status page of the service and then look through the components. They cannot be added to the dashboard and monitored separately. IsDown users can be notified when a component is down or undergoing maintenance.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: API

StatusGator provides an API, while IsDown added documentation on their API later, after October 2022. API is an advanced option, that will give access to your dashboard, service subscriptions, and components. You can get an API token and detailed instructions from StatusGator, allowing advanced integrations with just about any kind of back-end service or data warehouse.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: SSO

Security-minded users can take advantage of SSO with StatusGator. Users can authenticate from Okta, Azure, and Google Single Sign On. This feature is available on plans starting at $137 per month.

IsDown supports SSO on the Business plan for $150 per month. However, the user needs to contact support to set it up.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Two-Factor Authentication

Another important security feature is two-factor authentication. StatusGator can quickly configure 2FA in the user section of their account. To add the second security factor, a user needs an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, Authy, or a password manager like 1Password. StatusGator does not support SMS-based 2FA because of well-known security vulnerabilities with this process.
IsDown does not support two-factor authentication.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Public Status Pages

Public status pages have been a part of StatusGator since its launch. Many customers stay on top of outages by providing StatusGator’s status pages to their IT staff, help desk support, employees, partners, or customers. StatusGator allows the creation of multiple status pages, named uniquely for each team or business department.

With the IsDown.app, renaming the initial dashboard is not available. As StatusGator allows for creating status pages and naming them, IsDown offers to create a profile, e.g. Engineering, Marketing, or Sales, that will have a dashboard for that profile. The initial dashboard is called “All Company”, which is also a drop-down menu with settings that can be a bit confusing. User settings are limited to timezone, email frequency, and profile management.

With StatusGator, a user can access account settings, including password change, setting up 2FA, adding a billing address, and viewing the current subscription plan.

The IsDown dashboard shows stats in numbers for each service within the past 24 hours, while StatusGator has a more comprehensive view of the status for each service in bold text with a color scheme, so a user can quickly see what service experiences downtime or undergoes maintenance. StatusGator allows historical data export, enabling teams to extract uptime information from their vendors and export it to a CSV.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Status Override

If a service provider reports downtime on their official status page, the status in StatusGator also shows downtime. However, now all outages affect you and your team. In this case, you can manually update the status on your StatusGator status page.

The status override can be locked to prevent automatic updates from a service provider. If the status is left unlocked, it will reflect any update issued by the provider.

With the override feature by StatusGator, you can manually change the status of any service.

IsDown does not have status override capabilities, causing dashboards to reflect irrelevant statuses for you and your team.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Customization

StatusGators gives customization options such as a light or dark theme, adding a company logo, including a dark mode logo, and CSS. You can also remove the StatusGator branding.

With IsDown, users can hide branding on a Premium plan starting at $74 per month.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Pricing

StatusGator has a plan that is completely free while IsDown only offers a free limited trial. Pricing starts at $72 per month for StatusGator and $37 per month for IsDown. However, the Starter plan ($15) for IsDown is heavily limited.
StatusGator offers a free plan, while IsDown does not have a free plan.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Integrations

StatusGator offers a variety of integrations, including StatusHub, StatusPage, Better Uptime, and PagerDuty along with webhooks and an API for advanced integrations. More integrations become available with upper-tier plans with both platforms. However, StatusGator allows you to embed your status page link on all plans. Also, users can display their system statuses on a TV screen.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Support

StatusGator has a well-documented knowledge base that is organized with a detailed search option. It also has a dedicated support team to ensure immediate responses. StatusGator averages a 90-minute response time to support requests. IsDown has a single article in its knowledge base.

StatusGator vs. IsDown: Website Monitoring

StatusGator also allows website monitoring including that of your own website.

IsDown does not support website monitoring and therefore requires the purchase of a separate tool. There’s also no ability to add your website status to your status page.

Conclusion

If you need to monitor all your dependencies in one place, with a variety of features, choose StatusGator.
It is a reliable product that has been on the market for years. New features and updates are added regularly. A free plan is also available for you to start using StatusGator today.
