Docker Outage History

Docker Desktop on macOS failed to start after macOS flagged the Docker components as malware (com.docker.vmnetd or com.docker.socket). The incident lasted from 8:00 AM UTC to 9:25 AM UTC (about 1 hour and 25 minutes). During the outage the Docker Hub Automated Builds component was listed in maintenance. The status page posted two updates and provided a workaround instructing users to quit Docker Desktop, ensure no Docker processes remain, and stop related services as described in the guidance.

An incident began at 1:40 AM UTC and affected multiple Docker components, including Docker Desktop for macOS, Docker Hub Web Services, Docker Hub Automated Builds, and Docker Authentication. Users reported Docker Desktop startup failures due to macOS malware warnings, as well as problems with password reset emails, errors in the Desktop Insights Admin Console, and failures to push or pull from the Docker Registry. Some users also encountered 403 errors accessing the Docker Registry.

Over the course of the incident, Docker issued several status updates across the affected components, noting degradations and ongoing investigations. A period of builds getting stuck in pending occurred before recovery. The situation gradually improved, and Docker Desktop returned to normal operation by 2025-01-13T15:25:00Z. The outage spanned roughly five days from 1:40 AM UTC to Jan 13, 2025 3:25 PM UTC.
