Datacenter Cooling Event - Southeast Asia - Extended Mitigation

Details

Impact Statement:
Starting around 20:19 UTC on 7 February 2023, a utility power surge in the Southeast Asia region tripped a subset of cooling units offline in one of the Availability Zones. While working to restore the cooling units, temperatures in the datacenter increased and we have proactively powered down a small subset of compute and storage units to avoid damage to hardware and reduce cooling system load.
All impacted storage and compute scale units are in the same datacenter, within one of the region’s three Availability Zones (AZs). Multiple downstream services have been identified as impacted.
Current Status – 02:30 UTC
We are continuing to focus our efforts on mitigation for services which were impacted due to this incident. The core storage and compute services restoration have been completed successfully.
We have several other key services fully recovered and for some of which we are still working on post recovery checks. We are closely monitoring the datacenter metrics for storage and compute resources which continue to show healthy thresholds.
We will continue to provide updates as we have further progress towards service restoration. We will share our next update in 2 hours or as events warrant.

Datacenter Cooling Event - Southeast Asia

Details

Issue Summary: Starting around 20:19 UTC on 7 February 2023, a utility power surge in the Southeast Asia region tripped all of the chiller units for one datacenter offline. While working to restore the chiller units, temperatures in the datacenter increased so we are proactively powering down compute, storage and networking resources to avoid damage to hardware. All impacted infrastructure is in the same datacenter, within one of the region’s three Availability Zones (AZs). Downstream services that have been identified as impacted include Azure App Services, Azure Backup, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Database for MySQL & flexible server, Azure Database for PostgreSQL & flexible server, Azure Log Analytics, Azure Red Hat OpenShift, Azure Search, Azure SQL Database, and Azure Virtual Machines (VMs).

Storage - West Europe - Validating Recovery

Details

Impact Statement: Starting at 07:44 UTC on 18 Jan 2023, a subset of customers using Storage in West Europe may experience higher than expected latency, timeouts or HTTP 500 errors when accessing data stored on Storage accounts hosted in this region. Additional services with dependencies on storage may also experience impact.
Current Status: We have determined that a subset of storage clusters in one of the region datacenter experienced a drop in availability and may have rebooted. We are seeing signs of recovery and most customers should now see normal service availability. We are continuing to recover the few unhealthy components. An update will be provided within 60 minutes, or as events warrant.

If Azure Database for PostgreSQL is having system outages or experiencing other critical issues, red down notifications appear on the status page. In most cases, it means that core functions are not working properly, or there is some other serious customer-impacting event underway.

Warn notifications are used when Azure Database for PostgreSQL is undergoing a non-critical issue like minor service issues, performance degradation, non-core bugs, capacity issues, or problems affecting a small number of users.

Azure Database for PostgreSQL does not post separate notifications for planned maintenance work so we are unable to send notifications when maintenance windows begin. If you need Azure Database for PostgreSQL maintenance notifications, please email us.

Azure Database for PostgreSQL does not publish a feed of proactive maintenance events on their status page at this time. If they do, be sure to let us know and we'll aggregate Azure Database for PostgreSQL maintenance events into your unified calendar.

When Azure Database for PostgreSQL posts issues on their status page, we collect the main headline message and include that brief information or overview in notifications to StatusGator subscribers.

When Azure Database for PostgreSQL has outages or other service-impacting events on their status page, we pull down the detailed informational updates and include them in notifications.
