Users may be intermittently unable to access SharePoint Online sites

Title: Users may be intermittently unable to access SharePoint Online sites

User impact: Users may be intermittently unable to access SharePoint Online sites.

More info: Affected users may also be intermittently unable to access or edit SharePoint Online list items and start workflows in SharePoint Online in the modern experience for lists and libraries. Affected users see an access denied error or a "Sorry, you don't have access" message. As the issue is intermittent in nature, retries may be successful.

Current status: We've determined the responsible service build update contained a code change issue that intermittently impacts users accessing sites, accessing or editing list items, and starting workflows in SharePoint Online in the modern experience for lists and libraries. Our telemetry indicates the SharePoint Online service is healthy after we've finished deploying an older, healthy service build to the affected environment. We've also received initial reports from users that the impact is remediated. Users who still see impact may need to refresh the page twice in an existing browser session or open the page in a new browser session and then refresh the page once, which should resolve the issue. We're continuing to monitor telemetry and awaiting additional confirmation from affected users to ensure the impact is resolved.

Scope of impact: The problem may intermittently impact any user attempting to access sites, access or edit list items, or start workflows in SharePoint Online in the modern experience for lists and libraries.

Start time: Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 8:35 PM UTC

Root cause: A recent service build update contains a code change issue that intermittently impacts users accessing sites, accessing or editing list items, and starting workflows in SharePoint Online in the modern experience for lists and libraries.

Users may be unable to access various Microsoft 365 services

Details

Title: Users may be unable to access various Microsoft 365 services

User impact: Users may be unable to access various Microsoft 365 services.

More info: Specifically, users attempting access Microsoft 365 services that leverage SQL Database may be impacted. New connections to these databases may result in an error or timeout. Existing connections remain available to accept new requests; however, if those connections are terminated then re-established, they may experience errors.

Impacted services include but are not limited to:
- SharePoint Online
- OneDrive for Business
- Microsoft Intune

Current status: We've identified that a portion of our infrastructure is operating below optimal thresholds. We are actively redirecting impactged traffic to alternate systems to provide relief to users in an expedient manner. We're monitoring telemetry to confirm it resolves the impact.

Scope of impact: This issue may affect any users attempting to access various Microsoft 365 services.

Users in Africa may be unable to access multiple Microsoft 365 services or features

Details

Title: Users in Africa may be unable to access multiple Microsoft 365 services or features

User impact: Users in Africa may be unable to access Multiple Microsoft 365 services or features.

Current status: We’ve identified that multiple major fibre cables which manage requests in and out of the Africa region are broken. We’re undertaking multiple workstreams to address the issue:
- We’re working with the third-party carrier provider who manages the fibre cables to identify the cause and address the issue
- We’re redirecting multiple Microsoft 365 services and functionalities to leverage alternate healthy components where possible
- We’re performing traffic-management operations to optimize the usage of the available fibre cables and networking infrastructure within the region

Scope of impact: The issue significantly impacts users within the Africa region, however, users in other geographic locations may be impacted if their connections are routed through impacted networking components.

Users can't access SharePoint Online sites and receive an authentication error

Details

Title: Users can't access SharePoint Online sites and receive an authentication error

User impact: Users may be unable to access SharePoint Online sites and receive an authentication error.

More info: This might only impact multi-geo users that have more than 255 apps installed, which we’re currently validating.

Current status: Our investigation of this issue has identified a recent authentication change that may prevent some users from accessing SharePoint Online sites. Failure to access sites may be accompanied by an authentication error. We've created an optimization fix that can be manually run to correct the issue and remediate impact. We're preparing this manual fix now and will provide more details regarding the root cause and fix during our next scheduled update. In parallel, we're working on a fix that can be automatically applied to all impacted users.

Scope of impact: Your organization is affected by this event, and some users attempting to access SharePoint Online sites may be impacted.

About Our SharePoint Online Status Page Integration

SharePoint Online is a Microsoft solution that StatusGator has been monitoring since August 2023. Over the past 9 months, we have collected data on on more than 24 outages that affected SharePoint Online users. When SharePoint Online publishes downtime on their status page, they do so using 3 different statuses: up, warn, and down which we use to provide granular uptime metrics and notifications.

More than 100 StatusGator users monitor SharePoint Online to get notified when it's down or has an outage. This makes it one of the most popular microsoft services monitored on our platform. We've sent more than 400 notifications to our users about SharePoint Online incidents, providing transparency and peace of mind. You can get alerts by signing up for a free StatusGator account.

If SharePoint Online is having system outages or experiencing other critical issues, red down notifications appear on the status page. In most cases, it means that core functions are not working properly, or there is some other serious customer-impacting event underway.

Warn notifications are used when SharePoint Online is undergoing a non-critical issue like minor service issues, performance degradation, non-core bugs, capacity issues, or problems affecting a small number of users.

SharePoint Online does not post separate notifications for planned maintenance work so we are unable to send notifications when maintenance windows begin. If you need SharePoint Online maintenance notifications, please email us.

SharePoint Online does not publish a feed of proactive maintenance events on their status page at this time. If they do, be sure to let us know and we'll aggregate SharePoint Online maintenance events into your unified calendar.

When SharePoint Online posts issues on their status page, we collect the main headline message and include that brief information or overview in notifications to StatusGator subscribers.

When SharePoint Online has outages or other service-impacting events on their status page, we pull down the detailed informational updates and include them in notifications. These messages often include the current details about how the problem is being mitigated, or when the next update will occur.

At this time, we do not gather individual component data from the SharePoint Online status page. If you need this capability, please be sure to reach out.
